Statement of Iniobong Irene Pepple: Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) National Elections 2018
Distinguished members of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), the 2018 Bar Elections is prepping up to be one of the most defining elections in Bar history. The stakes are high, the parade of candidates is great, the passion of supporters is unprecedented, and there is an ever-growing public interest, principally because we are in the digital/information age. This digital component has provided probably the greatest challenge yet in this Bar Election season.
The pre-election process of verification is a particular case in point, on which a second ICT service provider is at work presently. I wish to commend the teaming mass of Nigerian lawyers for their patience and for keeping the faith for a leadership transition in the national leadership of the NBA. I urge us to keep trying to verify until we succeed. This is the only way our votes will count and democracy in the Bar will be strengthened.
I personally experienced difficulty but with persistence concluded my verification. I have personally reached out to a number of NBA members online and offline to assist with difficulties with verification. I am glad too that Ini Irene Pepple for Assistant Financial Secretary (IIPFAS) platforms have proven robust fora for useful ideas on getting around Bar election related challenges. I have reached out to necessary quarters with feedback on a number of problems encountered by many lawyers in the Bar Election processes and will continue to do so.
I am encouraged that the Nigerian Bar Association Election Committee (ECNBA) has acknowledged a lot of these challenges and extended verification to 10 a.m. of Sunday 5 August 2018. Accreditation and e-voting is now slated for 11:59 p.m. of Monday 6 August 2018 to 11:59 p.m. of Wednesday 8 August 2018.
I encourage us all to keep in mind the folk wisdom that nothing good comes easy, and stay engaged until victory is achieved in an impressive vote tally.
Thank you
Iniobong Irene Pepple
