The Nigerian Legal Research website, a division of the Nigerian Lawyers Directory, aims to provide free access to all aspects of Nigerian law or Nigerian legal information. Nigerian legal information resources comprise Nigerian public legal information and Nigerian legal scholarship.
Nigerian Law: Nigerian Public Legal Information
Nigerian laws or Nigerian public legal information include the following:
- Laws of the Federation of Nigeria;
- Judicial decisions or judgments of all federal courts;
- Federal Government law-related documents;
- Laws of the States of Nigeria;
- Judicial decisions or judgments of all State courts;
- State Government law-related documents;
- Laws of the Local Governments of Nigeria; and
- Local Government law-related documents.
Laws of the Federation of Nigeria: The laws of the federation of Nigeria are the federal laws (called “Acts”) enacted or made by the Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The Nigerian National Assembly (comprising the Senate and the House of Representatives) is the federal legislature that has the constitutional function of making federal laws.
Judicial decisions or judgments of all federal courts: The judicial decisions or judgments of all the federal courts established by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (the Nigerian Constitution) and other courts and tribunals established under any federal legislation.
Federal Government law-related documents: All the law-related documents published by the Federal Government of Nigeria, including reports and research.
Laws of the States of Nigeria: The laws of the thirty-six (36) States of Nigeria are the State laws (called “Laws”) enacted or made by the Government of each State of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The House of Assembly of each State is the State legislature that has the constitutional function of making State laws.
Judicial decisions or judgments of all State courts: The judicial decisions of all the State courts established by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (the Nigerian Constitution) and other courts and tribunals established under any State legislation.
State Government law-related documents: All the law-related documents published by the Government of each State of Nigeria, including reports and research.
Laws of the Local Governments of Nigeria: The laws of each Local Government in each of the States of Nigeria. Each Local Government legislature, comprising elected Councillors, has the constitutional authority to make laws (called “Bylaws”) in the exercise of its functions under the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999.
Local Government law-related documents: All the law-related documents published by the Local Government of each State of Nigeria, including reports and research.
Nigerian Law: Nigerian Legal Scholarship (Journals, Books, Papers, Reports)
This category of Nigerian legal information, for the purposes of the Nigerian Legal Research website resources, comprises the following:
- Law-related academic papers or articles published in academic journals;
- Law-related papers presented in conferences, seminars, and workshops;
- Law-related reports and research not sponsored by any level of government in Nigeria (Federal, State, and Local); and
- Law-related books.
