Modernisation of an Ailing Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and the Challenges for the Next NBA President

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) must self-reform or we opt for the formation of a parallel Nigerian lawyers association, the way accountants now have parallel associations in Nigeria: Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) and Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN). And that nuclear choice or option is inherent in every lawyer’s exercise of his / her human right to freedom of association. It borders on the human-right issue of personal self-determination.
We need a President of the NBA that will modernise the Association, make it worthy of membership, cause it to be member-friendly and not exploitative in any manner whatsoever, and address the critical issue of the holistic WELFARE of Nigerian lawyers.
We need a President of the NBA that will address the critical issue of legal scholarship (research and publication) in the Nigerian legal profession.
I’m happy that the Paul Usoro, SAN-led administration addressed the critical issue of an online payment gateway for NBA products and services, which I did my best to highlight in the 2018 NBA election process. Congratulations to Paul Usoro, SAN and his 2018–2020 National Executive Committee on this historic achievement.
I intend to publish critical aspects of overdue modernisation of the NBA that any responsible NBA President should address in the next administration that is expected to be inaugurated this year (2020), for which the spirited preparations for NBA national elections are already underway.
